Carell was born as the youngest of four boys at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, and raised in adjacent Acton, Massachusetts. Edwin A. Carell, his father, was a mechanical engineer, and Harriet Theresa, his mother, was a mental nurse. Stanley Koch, his maternal uncle, collaborated with physicist Allen B. DuMont to develop cathode ray tubes. His father was of Italian and German ancestry, and his mother was Polish. In the 1950s, his father’s surname was changed from Caroselli to Carell.
Carell was reared Roman Catholic and attended Nashoba Brooks, The Fenn, and Middlesex schools. In high school, he participated in ice hockey and lacrosse. He played the fife with other family members and eventually joined a reenactment group portraying the 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of Foot. He credited his interest in history to this, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1984.

Steve Carell The Dana Carvey Show
In 1991, Carell appeared with the Chicago ensemble The Second City, where Stephen Colbert briefly served as his understudy. Carell made his cinematic debut in Curly Sue, playing a minor role. He appeared on The Dana Carvey Show, an ABC sketch comedy program that aired in the spring of 1996. Carell, along with fellow cast member Colbert, performed the voice of Gary, part of the Robert Smigel-produced animated short The Ambiguously Gay Duo, which aired on Saturday Night Live later that year. Despite the fact that it only lasted seven episodes, The Dana Carvey Show is credited with launching Carell’s career.
He appeared in two short-lived television programs, Come to Papa and Over the Top. He has made numerous guest appearances, including “Funny Girl,” a Just Shoot Me! episode. In the third season, he earned around $175,000 per episode, which was more than double his compensation from the previous two seasons. During filming, Carell was given “flex time” to work on theatrical pictures, notably Evan Almighty. The fourth season of The Office was canceled owing to Carell’s refusal to cross the picket line during the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike.
Carell penned two episodes of The Office, “Casino Night” and “Survivor Man,” which received critical acclaim and earned him a Writers Guild of America Award. Carell announced his departure from The Office in 2010 to pursue a film career. He was later denied an opportunity to return for the series finale in 2013, however, he did appear briefly in the series finale. Carell denied a resurrection of The Office in 2018, claiming that the show is more popular now than it was when it was on the air.
