Mangan was brought into the world in Contemplates End, in Enfield, north London, to Irish guardians. He has two sisters, Anita and Lisa. James, his father, passed away at 63 from a brain tumor. Mangan attended Lochinver House School for Boys in Potters Bar and Haileybury and Imperial Service College, a boarding school in the village of Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire, both of which are now coeducational. He was in a school prog musical gang called Aragon, who recorded a collection called The Wizard’s Fantasy.
Mangan took a year off to care for his mother, Mary, who died of colon cancer at the age of 45, after earning a Bachelor of Arts in law from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Weeks after her demise, he tried out for the Regal Institute of Sensational Workmanship and proceeded to read up there for a considerable length of time.
