It airs daily from 9 to 10 a.m. on Detroit’s NPR station, WDET-FM. He also hosts Detroit Public Television’s American Black Journal, a weekly chat show that features African American viewpoints on arts, culture, and community concerns that affect Detroit, Michigan, and the country.Henderson has worked as a reporter, editorial writer, and editor for the Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, Lexington Herald-Leader, and Knight Ridder newspapers. From 2009 until 2017, he served as the Editorial Page Editor and columnist for the Detroit Free Press.
In 2016, Henderson argued that Michiganders should take legislators who received money to shelter Michigan’s charter schools from supervision, “sew them into burlap sacks with rabid animals, and toss them into the Straits of Mackinac”. After facing criticism from conservatives, he stated that his remark was “hyperbole.” “Everyone knows I don’t have access to that much burlap,” he remarked. In response to his firing, Henderson said on his own radio show that he apologized to the ladies involved and acknowledged it was “bad judgement” on his part, but he also stated that he disagreed with the Free Press’s decision and would be “exploring legal action.”Henderson’s attorney has stated that there was no litigation and a settlement was reached in July 2018.

Henderson received the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary and the 2014 National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year Award while writing for the Detroit Free Press. For his reporting on Detroit’s financial crisis, he received both the Pulitzer Prize for commentary and the National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year Award in 2014. In addition, he has won the Scripps Howard Award for Commentary thrice.
