Sonja Sohn is an American actress, director, activist, and filmmaker best known for her role in the HBO drama The Wire as Baltimore detective Kima Greggs (2002–2008). She is also well-known for her role in the independent film Slam.

Sohn’s career began as a slam poet. She was discovered while performing her poetry in a theater by director Marc Levin, who cast her in his 1998 film Slam.’ She also co-wrote the film and received praise for her performance. Her next role was as Kanita in Martin Scorsese’s drama film ‘Bringing Out the Dead,’ in which she co-starred with Nicolas Cage, John Goodman, and Patricia Arquette. The actress appeared in the film ‘Shaft’ in the new millennium. Sohn was cast as Detective Shakima ‘Kima’ Greggs on ‘The Wire.’ The crime drama debuted on HBO and lasted 56 episodes. She appeared in ‘G,’ a drama film about a music mogul trying to reclaim his estranged lover.

Sohn had a recurring role in the police procedural series ‘Cold Case’ in 2006 and 2007. She appeared in the dance film ‘Step Up 2: The Streets’ in 2008. That same year, she debuted as Trish Evans in the sitcom ‘Brothers & Sisters.’ In 2010, she was cast as Sonya Rucker in ‘The Good Wife,’ and as Samantha Baker in ‘Body of Proof,’ a medical drama series that aired on ABC from 2011 to 2012. She played Agent Olivia Riley in ‘Burn Notice’ in 2012.

Sohn starred as Lenore/Esther in the television series ‘The Originals’ from 2014 to 2015. During this time, she also starred as Franny in ‘The Missing Girl,’ a film about a comic book store owner who hires a graphic novel artist who is trying to break into the world of comics. She appeared in the dramas Luke Cage’ and ‘Shut Eye’ in 2016. Sohn directed the documentary Baltimore Rising’ a year later. Following that, she appeared in the sitcom ‘The Chi.’ In 2019, the talented actress appeared in ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ a web TV series, as well as the sports drama film ‘High Flying Bird.’
