It all started in 2014, when Sofia was cast as a guest star in the third season of the teen sitcom ‘Austin and Ally.’ Sofia appeared as a guest star in MTV’s popular but short-lived ‘Faking It’ that same year. Despite the minor roles, Sofia’s screen presence and spontaneity were hard to miss. The big break came in the form of ‘Descendants,’ a Disney musical fantasy TV movie that followed the descendants of some of Disney’s most (in)famous villains (the Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, and Jafar) on their quest to free their parents from captivity in 2015. The film was an instant hit, and it proved to be a watershed moment in Sofia’s career.
Sofia played Evie, the Evil Queen’s daughter, in the film, and her distinct voice set her apart from the rest of the ensemble cast. Perhaps this is what prompted Disney to release a second version of ‘Rotten to the Core,’ one of the film’s hit songs. Sofia’s single reached No. 1 on the ‘Billboard Kid Digital Songs’ chart in December 2015. Sofia’s credentials as a promising singer were also reaffirmed when the song peaked at No. 5 on the ‘Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles’ chart.
