Anthony Padilla started the franchise in 2002 when he created smosh.com and several different Flash cartoons. He claims that the moniker was inspired by an incident in which he misinterpreted a friend’s explanation of a mosh pit for a “mosh pit.”  Other content makers, including future YouTuber TomSka, would upload videos to smosh.com in the pre-YouTube period. Ian Hecox, a friend of his, later joined the venture. Padilla and Hecox originally met in science class in sixth grade. They made pals and quickly realized they had a sense of humor. They joined YouTube in 2005 and uploaded multiple videos together, lip-syncing Mortal Kombat, Power Rangers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme songs.

They started filming short YouTube sketches, such as Food Battle and That Damn Neighbor, which they do every year. his popularity grew, and it eventually became one of YouTube’s most subscribed channels.  Smosh.com was completely redesigned in 2009, with the addition of a games section and features in the video part. he created the “he Pit” feature in January 2010, which is a blog that contains pop-culture trivia and written humor. In addition, the channel debuted three his-based web series in 2010: Ian Is Bored began as a collection of Hecox’s comic videos.
