Grey signed a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group and a recording contract with Machine Shop Recordings under the name Holly Brook in 2004, when she was 17 years old. Under the aforementioned labels, she released her debut studio album, Like Blood Like Honey, in 2006.

Grey and her mother were members of the folk duo Generations. She released her first EP, ‘Holly Brook EP,’ in 2005, and co-wrote the songs “She Said” and “Done With Like” for Larson’s album, ‘Finally Out of P.E. Her debut album, ‘Like Blood Like Honey,’ was released the following year. Following this, she was featured on two tracks from Apathy’s studio album titled ‘Wanna Snuggle,’ “No Sad Tomorrow” and “Victim.”The singer released her third EP, ‘O’ Dark: Thirty,’ on June 10, 2010. She also wrote her first song, “Love The Way You Lie,” for Rihanna and Eminem that year. Grey went on to release her single “Dance Without You” in June 2011.
Her second single, “Invisible,” was released to radio in July. She co-wrote the single “Clarity” for Russian-German musician Zedd the following year. “C’mon Let Me Ride,” her lead single from her album “Don’t Look Down,” was also released. She released a song called “Shot Me Down” on January 20, 2014. That same year, the American singer collaborated with Nicki Minaj on the song “Bed of Lies” for the latter’s album ‘The Pinkprint.’ Then, in February 2015, Skylar released a song titled “Fifty Shades of Grey” for the film’s soundtrack “”I recognize you”.
