Sir Lady moved to Los Angeles, California, where she met and befriended Little Richard in the mid-1960s. They maintained a relationship for decades. By 1965, she had become a nightclub staple, with connections to Redd Foxx, Sammy Davis Jr., Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson, Rudy Ray Moore, LaWanda Page, and Don Rickles. Lady Java cites Lena Horne, Mae West, and Josephine Baker as inspirations for her performances, which include dancing, acting, singing, and acting. In early fall 1967, after two weeks of success at Java’s sprawling Redd Foxx Club, the Los Angeles Police Department began shutting down Java’s now-famous video, citing a local ban, Rule 9, which stipulated “Crime by Dressing or Not Dressing as an Alien” and threatening to fine the club hosting him. In response, Java protested Redd Foxx’s club on October 21 and hired the American Civil Liberties Union to reverse the policy. The court ultimately dismissed Java’s lawsuit against the American Civil Liberties Union, stating that only club owners could sue. Rule 9 was finally repealed in 1969 after much debate.
In 1978, Java performed with Lena Horne at the birthday party of late-night host and author Gertrude Gipson. Beginning in the 1980s, Java appeared in very few withheld public information. After suffering a stroke and retiring from acting, she made a limited return to public life, appearing in local demonstrations and interviews in Southern California. In June 2016, she appeared as a guest at the 18th Annual Trans Pride LA Festival alongside CeCe McDonald. Java also participated in the 2022 Los Angeles Pride Parade as the community’s grand marshal. Java is considered a pioneer.
