While working as a student producer at her university’s student-run station, Temple Update, Fortson was mentored by former WTXF-TV Fox 29 Philadelphia anchor Tracey Matisak, who persuaded her to work in front of the camera. Fortson frequently praises Tracey with being her inspiration and the first African American woman she recalls seeing on television as a child. After graduating from Temple, Fortson began working as a post-graduate intern at Blue Ridge Cable TV 13 in Lehighton, Pennsylvania. Following her stint at TV 13, Fortson was employed as a correspondent for SECTV2 News. In addition to her daily reporting, Fortson supplied the Lehigh Valley with annual 10-day live coverage of the nation’s largest music festival, “Musikfest”.
She has also covered Valley visits by then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, his wife Michelle Obama, and prominent journalists such as Larry Kane and NBC Correspondent Lisa Myers. She was well-known throughout the SECTV viewing area for her coverage of annual parades with the Valley’s popular Mr. Paul, as well as her community-based entertainment and feature-style reporting. Fortson went on to create a women’s clothing business called “Hidden Glam” and work in public relations after leaving SECTV.
