He founded the rap group 3 with friends in Da Clip in high school, and while attending Miami-Dade College, he began pursuing theater, landing a scholarship quickly, and eventually becoming president of the campus theater club. McKinney, with a classmate and fellow actor Bechir Sylvain and actor, writer Arturo Rossi, went on to co-found a theatre company, Ground Up & Rising. McKinney performed improv, stilt-walking, and aerial work throughout southern Florida as part of a collective of artists called Urban Disturbance.
McKinney collaborated again with Sylvain after moving to Los Angeles to create, write, and produce the web series Making It Happen, which won the audience award at the Short Cuts Film Festival. In the sci-fi thriller Boss Stage, directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts, McKinney is next to be seen on the big screen.
