Sewell Chan is the editor-in-chief of The Texas Tribune in the United States. Prior to that, he was the editorial page editor at the Los Angeles Times, where he handled the editorial board as well as the newspaper’s Op-Ed and Sunday Opinion pages.

Chan was born in Flushing, Queens, the son of Chinese and Hong Kong immigrants, and attended New York City public schools and Hunter College High School. His father was a taxi cab driver. He won a Marshall Scholarship for graduate studies at Oxford University after graduating from Harvard University with an AB in Social Studies in 1998 In the year 2000, he obtained his MPhil in Politics.

From 2000 until 2004, Chan covered municipal politics, poverty and social services, and education for The Washington Post. In 2004, Chan joined The New York Times. Chan joined The New York Times’ Washington bureau as an economic policy journalist in January 2010. Chan was designated deputy editor of the Times Op-Ed page and Sunday Review section in February 2011. Chan worked as an International News Editor at The New York Times from 2015 to 2018. Chan was hired deputy managing editor of the Los Angeles Times in August 2018 to “supervise a team of journalists responsible for initiating coverage and developing content for its digital, video, and print platforms.”
Chan was elevated to editorial page editor in April 2020, with responsibility for the editorial and op-ed sections. He was the principal author of a 2020 editorial that examined the Los Angeles Times’ tumultuous past with communities of color and journalists of color, as well as apologizing for the newspaper’s racist heritage. After Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, Chan was chastised for releasing a full page of letters to Trump supporters in California. Chan was chosen Editor-in-Chief of The Texas Tribune in October 2021.
