Ritter, a former United States Army private and intelligence officer, spent 12 years in the Marine Corps, specializing on the Basmachi guerrilla movement in Soviet Central Asia during the 1920s and 1930s. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iran-Iraq War, he was the principal analyst for the Marine Corps Rapid Deployment Force. Ritter’s scholarly research concentrated on the Basmachi rebel movement and its commanders, Fazail Maksum and Ibrahim Bek. He worked as a ballistic missile intelligence analyst under General Norman Schwarzkopf during Desert Storm (1991).
He produced repeated internal reports disputing Schwarzkopf’s assertion that the US had destroyed 16 mobile Scud missile launchers in Iraq, claiming they could not be validated. Ritter later worked for Fox News as a security and military expert, and he had a lengthy association with the UK’s foreign intelligence espionage organization MI6.
