Sarah Spain Super Bowl

Spain sprang to prominence in 2007 after posting an ad on eBay offering to be someone’s “date” to Super Bowl XLI, in which the Chicago Bears faced the Indianapolis Colts. She was living in Los Angeles at the time and had purchased a plane ticket to Miami in anticipation of attending the game with pals. Her pals, however, decided they couldn’t afford to go, leaving Spain alone and without a game ticket. She described the auction as a PR ploy, hoping that a firm would try to generate exposure by sponsoring her appearance at the Super Bowl.

Unilever, the producers of Axe Body Spray, heard about the auction and funded Spain’s fees to attend the game, launching a marketing campaign to “see how many guys would do the same thing for a chance to see their team play.” Spain claims that critics of her Super Bowl stunt misunderstand both her actions and her motivations.
