Sara Canning is a well-known Canadian actress well known for her roles on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, in the 2009 feature film Black Field, in Primeval: New World, a Canadian television series, and in the Global medical drama Remedy. Her other roles include in the 2017 film War for the Planet of the Apes and in the Netflix original series A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Canning performed in several stage productions while attending Bev Facey Community High School, as well as on the Festival Place stage in her hometown.

Canning made her professional acting debut at the age of 18 in George Orwell’s 1984 at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. She began her studies in general arts at the University of Alberta, and she considered a career in journalism. Canning, still interested in acting, dropped out of university at the age of 19 and relocated to Vancouver to pursue a career as an actor. In 2007, she completed a year-long screen acting program at Vancouver Film School.
