Canning performed in several stage productions while attending Bev Facey Community High School, as well as on the Festival Place stage in her hometown.
Canning made her professional acting debut at the age of 18 in George Orwell’s 1984 at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. She began her studies in general arts at the University of Alberta, and she considered a career in journalism.
