Ross starts seeing Mona, Monica’s coworker, after Rachel and Ross decide to share parenting responsibilities but not to get back together romantically. Joey urges Rachel to remain in Ross’s apartment and helps her overcome her anxieties about becoming a mother. But Joey tells Rachel about his emotions for her, and Mona ends her relationship with Ross.
Along with their daughter Emma, Ross and Rachel share a home, but they struggle to become pregnant. Despite their physical incompatibility, Monica and Chandler choose to adopt. Mike Hannigan declines Phoebe’s proposal of remarriage. Rachel returns early to Ralph Lauren, thinking her coworker Gavin is attempting to take her job, only to find Gavin harbors romantic love for her. Because of her past with Ross, they kiss but do not go farther in their relationship.
In response, Rachel and Emma move in with Joey, and Ross retaliates by dating other women. After growing fond of him, Rachel is disappointed to learn that he is seeing Charlie, a recent hire who teaches palaeontology. After their breakup in the epilogue, Joey and Charlie kiss and get back together passionately.
