Jay, 29, made her stand-up comedy debut in 2012 after working in an office and as a music director for many years. She joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live in 2017, becoming the show’s first black female lead and only the second black female lead (actress Dannetra Vance joined the show 32 years ago (crew). She co-produced the “Black Danger” sketches. In 2018, she appeared in a half-hour stand-up special on Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents and performed stand-up comedy on Netflix’s The Comedy Lineup. “Donna’s Daughter” (2018) is Jay’s stand-up comedy debut and is available only on audio.
She is a Netflix stand-up special, 3 AM (2020), filmed at Masquerade in Atlanta, and received critical acclaim. His other credits include an appearance on Take My Wife from 2016 to 2018 and performing stand-up on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the 2017 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. In September 2020, HBO announced that it had ordered a series co-written by and starring Jay. He collaborated with Sam Jay and producer Prentice Penny on the series PAUSE. Season 1 premiered in May 2021, and was renewed for a second season by HBO two months later. Jay is the creator and star of the Peacock comedy series Bust, premiering in March 2022.
