Jay performed her first stand-up comedy act in 2012, at the age of 29, after years of working in an office and as a music manager. In 2017, she joined the writing crew of Saturday Night Live, becoming the show’s first black lesbian writer and the show’s second black lesbian overall (after actor Danitra Vance joined the cast 32 years previously). She collaborated on the “Black Jeopardy” skit. In 2018, she appeared in a half-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents and performed stand-up on Netflix’s The Comedy Lineup. Donna’s Daughter (2018) was Jay’s first stand-up comedy release, and it was solely available on audio.
3 in the Morning (2020), her debut Netflix stand-up comedy special, was taped at The Masquerade in Atlanta and earned critical acclaim. Her other credits include appearances on Take My Wife from 2016 to 2018, as well as stand-up performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and at the 2017 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival.
