Champion worked at Paducah, Kentucky’s WPSD-TV, and Jacksonville, Florida’s WJKS (later WCWJ). In 1988, he joined WABC-Eyewitness TV’s News in New York City as a weather forecaster. In 2004, he was paid $1.5 million per year to appear on Good Morning America. He made his debut as host of Sea Rescue on April 7, 2008, an instructional and informational show in Litton’s Weekend Adventure that focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation, and, in many cases, release of animals back into the wild.
Champion joined Good Morning America and ABC News on September 5, 2006, according to an announcement made in August 2006. On December 2, 2013, Champion announced his departure from ABC to join The Weather Channel as an on-air personality and managing editor. On December 4, 2013, he left Good Morning America. Ginger Zee took his place right away.
He appeared on Live with Kelly and Ryan, a daily chat show produced by WABC-TV, and CNN’s Larry King Live on occasion. “Let’s get to the boards,” he says frequently at the start of his 30-second weathercasts. Champion’s resignation from GMA was followed by the announcement that he would join The Weather Channel to headline his own morning show, America’s Morning Headquarters, which premiered on March 17, 2014. Champion announced in September 2015 that he will be leaving AMHQ to work as a contributor on the network’s primetime shows. Champion and The Weather Channel chose not to renew their partnership in December 2016. As a result, on December 27, 2016, Champion resigned from the company.
During the maternity leave of his replacement, Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee, he returned to ABC as a fill-in weather forecaster on Good Morning America. Beginning June 3, 2019, Champion will return to WABC-morning TV’s and lunchtime newscasts and contribute to ABC News, as announced on May 22, 2019.
