Ruth Taylor, a silent film star, was his mother, and Paul Steinberg Zuckerman, an Air Force brigadier general, was his father. He made his professional acting debut at 15 years of age in a Broadway production of Life with Dad. At Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, Henry received a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a senior fellowship in fiction. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the Army and toured with the Seventh Army Repertory Company in a play he had both composed and directed.
Henry is the co-creator and author of Getting Smart, the secret agent comedy TV series. For The Graduate, Captain Nice, Quark, and The Player, Henry wrote screenplays. The sex farce Candy and the romantic comedies The Owl and The Pussycat are among his many other screenwriting credits. In several of these, such as Candy and Catch-22, he also appeared as an actor. Henry was the 1997 recipient of the Distinguished Screenwriter Award at the Austin Film Festival.
His cameo in The Player in 1992 had him in playing himself pitching a sequel to the film 25 years later, which he claimed later led to real-life interest from some studios in such a project. Henry shared with Calder Willingham an Oscar nomination for their script for the film The Graduate in 1967, in which he also starred as a hotel concierge in a supporting role. For scripting and co-writing Captain Nice in 1967 and Quark in the 1978 series, he received several Emmy Awards. Henry also co-wrote the script for The Day of the Dolphin in 1973 and Procedure in 1984 and the thriller To Die For For Dark Crime in 1995.
Henry has starred in over 40 films. He and Warren Beatty co-directed Heaven Can Wait in 1978. Henry earned a second nomination for a joint Oscar, this time for Best Director. Later in his career, Henry became known on television for guest-starring and recurring roles. He appeared in Cleveland as Elka’s groom in 2011 in a multi-episode arc of Hot. He appeared opposite Holland Taylor on Broadway in Mother, a July 2009 play by Lisa Ebersole. He served twice as a contributor to The Daily Show, billed as the Senior Senior Correspondent of the show in 2007 and 2010. He also starred in the 30 Rock episodes Ludachristmas and Gentleman’s Intermission as Liz Lemon’s dad, Dick Lemon.
