Roz Ryan is an American actress, singer, and comedian who has worked in film, television, and Broadway theatre for more than 40 years. Ryan has been entertaining audiences for almost 30 years as an actress, singer, recording artist, nightclub and concert performer.

Ryan was born Rosalyn Bowen in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Gertrude and Thomas Bowen, who both worked for the Board of Education. She attended Mackenzie High School and graduated in 1969.

Aside from being a comic, Roz has also starred in several films and television shows.

Ryan’s first Broadway role was in Ain’t Misbehavin’, a Fats Waller-influenced musical that premiered in 1978. She guest-starred on “Muse of Comedy” and the Disney Channel sitcom “K.C.”, playing Grandma Gale, an undercover agent. She recorded “You’re My One and Only” on Stax/Volt 45. Ryan worked as a nightclub singer in Detroit for 13 years, then a friend suggested she audition for “Not Misbehavin’,” a Broadway talk musical featuring music by Fats Waller. Her audition was successful and she appeared on stage just 10 days later. Ryan appeared in many Broadway musicals, including the Tony Award-winning “Chicago,” for which she holds the record for longest-running role as Nurse “Mother” Morton. Ryan’s acting credits include “A Christmas Carol,” “Dreamgirls,” “One Mo’ Time” and the 2006 revival of “The Pajama Game.”

On television and in film, Ryan has appeared as Amen, Mrs. Dixon in Good News, and Flo Anderson in All About the Andersons And Famous. She also guest-starred in an episode of the television series “Barbershop”. She voiced the comic muse Thalia in Disney’s animated films Hercules and Hercules: The Animated Series. She is the voice of Boobie Whale in the 2008 animated television series The Bizarre Adventure of Pancakes. She appeared in the films I Wish I Loved My Wife, The Construction of Lies, and Forever. She spoke to Zeke’s teacher, Mrs. Fitzpatrick, in the film Kick Buttowski: Daredevil of Suburbia. She is the voice of the monster Razza on The Looney Tunes Show. She has also appeared in the Adventure Time episodes “Fiona and Cake”, “Bad Me Boy”, “Who’s the Prince Want All”, and “Five Bell Short”, and in the high-profile Adventure Time: Fiona and Cake series. She also stars in TVOne’s The Ricky Smiley Show. She recently starred on Broadway in Scandal: The Life and Trials of Amy Semple McPherson. In late May 2016, Ryan began her 13th run as Nurse “Mother” Morton in Chicago.
