Ross Ellet Career
Ross was given the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) certification, which is the American Meteorological Society’s highest honor. Ross had a fascination with weather and forecasting since he was a child. At the age of 5, he would watch TV every day and try to outsmart forecasters by making his own forecasts. Lake-effect snow, blizzards, ice storms, tornadoes, floods, and heatwaves were all common occurrences there. His interest in Meteorology was motivated by the harsh weather. Ross later earned a Meteorology degree from Purdue University, as well as minors in Communications and Sociology.
Ross began his broadcasting career in 2005 as the Weekend Meteorologist at WLFI in West Lafayette, Indiana. He accepted a Morning Meteorologist post in southern West Virginia two years later. He was appointed Chief Meteorologist of the station after only three months on the job.
Ross’s second job took him straight into tornado alley, where he worked at KHBS/KHOG in Arkansas. “Most people don’t realize how wild and extreme Northwest Arkansas is,” Ellet added. A catastrophic ice storm blanketed the Ozark Mountains in 1-3″ of ice just two months after Ross arrived. In some areas, power was out for three weeks. Flooding and severe tornadoes were common during the spring season. He won accolades for his severe weather coverage and a special broadcast on Arkansas black bears, in which he got to hold a wild newborn bear when he was there. Ross also spent time in Columbus, Ohio, working for the Ohio News Network and WBNS.
Ross joined the 13abc weather team as a weekend meteorologist and weather reporter during the scorching summer of 2012. In both 2014 and 2015, his favorite story was covering the Coast Guard’s ice-breaking mission during the near-historic Great Lakes ice coverage. The article earned Ross and photojournalist Todd Gaertner an Emmy nomination. Ross’s projections can now be seen on Action News This Morning every weekday. He supports the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts, and he enjoys adventure, travel, camping, hiking, astronomy, and photography.
