Ronny Chieng is a Malaysian comedian and actor. He is currently a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He is also the creator and star of Ronny Chieng: International Student, an ABC sitcom.

He attended Trinity College at the University of Melbourne in Australia, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance and a Bachelor of Laws degree. In 2012, he also earned a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University.

Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah at an Australian comedy festival in Melbourne in 2013. In 2015, Noah was requested to audition for the post of correspondent on The Daily Show, which he hosted from 2015 to 2022. Variety named him one of the 10 Comics to Watch in July 2016. Three months later, he appeared on The Daily Show and delivered an expletive-laden critique of a Jesse Watters clip on Fox News that many saw as racist. He also returned to New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood, where Watters had insulted people, and did more respectful Mandarin and Cantonese interviews. The video went viral and was covered by The Washington Post and Slate.
Chieng co-wrote and starred in the sitcom Chieng: International Student in 2017, which was inspired by his own experiences as a Malaysian student in Australia. It was created for Comedy Central in the United States and ABC TV in Australia. In 2018, he made his film debut as Eddie Cheng, an unpleasant banker, in Crazy Rich Asians. His debut Netflix stand-up special, Asian Comedian Destroys America!, was released in 2019, directed by his Daily Show associate Sebastian DiNatale. Chieng secured a deal with Netflix in early 2021 for two more stand-up specials and a “docu-comedy.”He also played the original character Jon Jon in the Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and it was reported that Chieng will be returning to the franchise.
