Ronnie Career
On May 28, 1959, he appeared on an episode of the television quiz show You Bet Your Life hosted by Groucho Marx. Schell delivers a riff on Beatnik humor. He first established his career as a comedian at the Hungry i nightclub in San Francisco, California, and introduced the Kingston Trio (thought to be the opening act) on the band’s 1962 album College Concert. Sher is best known for his role as Duke Slater on the 1960s television series Gomer Pyle. Schell portrayed Duke Slater, a USMC Marine and Gomer Pyle’s best friend, for three seasons. Schell left for one season to host his own sitcom, Morning World. He then returned to USMC Gomer Pyle as a Corporal in the fifth and final season. Sher plays Duke Slater, a streetwise man from the city, while Jim Nabors plays country executive Pyle. Slater returns as an organization that mostly acts as an intermediary between Pyle and the sheriff. Carter (played by Frank Sutton) is Pyle’s best friend.
Schell provided the voice of “Jason” in the “Star Wars” films and played the role of “Mr. Brown” in Disney’s Mouse Man at Walt Disney World. Schell’s rising popularity earned him the title of “America’s slowest actor.” Schell also appeared in several Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) commercials, including “Smile Check” and “PSA Gives You a Lift Pageant.” At the end of the Jerry Lewis PSA jingle, a voiceover says: “This is Jerry Lewis from the PSA, this is Ronnie Schell. What am I doing wrong?” By the 1980s, Schell was appearing in a variety of media. In 1980, he made television appearances for Shakey’s Pizza. Mid to late 1900s. In 2007, Sher joined Gary Collins, Mary Ann Mobley, Ruta Lee, and Steve Rossi in the “5 Star Revue” cabaret tour. In 2009, she starred in the off-Broadway production of Don’t Leave it All to Your Children!, a comedy-musical aimed specifically at baby boomers. Sher served as an acting consultant for Richard Dreyfuss on the 2019 Netflix film The Last Laugh.
