While attending Yale Law School, he was appointed as UNICEF’s Youth Spokesman, a position he held from 2001 to 2009. As a spokesperson, he traveled to Darfur, Sudan, to advocate for the rights of women and children caught up in the civil war. Ronan also accompanied his mother, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow, on trips to Sudan’s Darfur region to advocate for the safety of Darfuri refugees. While at Yale, he interned at the law firm ‘Davis Pollock & Wardwell and the office of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. From 2009 to 2013, he worked as a ‘Special Adviser for Humanitarian and NGO Affairs in the Obama administration’s bureau of the ‘Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan.’
He oversaw the US government’s relations with non-governmental organizations and civil society in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ms. Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State in the Obama administration, appointed Farrow as her Special Advisor and Director of Global Youth Issues in the State Department office. Hillary had appointed an ad hoc multiyear group to assess the country’s social and economic guidelines on youth issues, and the bureau was established to streamline the tasks. Beginning in 2010, Ronan was appointed as co-chairman of the task force for global youth issues, alongside David Barth, a veteran USAID official (United States Agency for International Development). Ronan’s primary responsibility as a special advisor was to develop guidelines for youth programs with the overarching goal of empowering youth.
Farrow served as Special Advisor from 2010 to 2012, after which the onus of maintaining the policy framework fell on the new incumbent. After finishing his time as a federal government advisor, Ronan left for Oxford University with a Rhodes scholarship to pursue doctoral studies in international relations. However, he arrived in the United States without having finished his dissertation. He has written op-eds, essays, and reports for several newspapers and magazines as a journalist. He has contributed to the ‘Los Angeles Times,’ ‘The Wall Street Journal,’ ‘The Guardian,’ ‘Foreign Policy,’ and ‘The Atlantic.’
In 2013, Ronan Farrow finished writing a book called ‘Pandora’s Box: How American Military Aid Creates America’s Enemies,’ which was published by Penguin Press in 2015. From 2014 to 2015, Ronan hosted a TV news show called ‘Ronan Farrow Daily,’ which aired on MSNBC. He has also hosted a number of other NBC TV shows and programs, including the ‘Today Show,’ ‘Morning Joe,’ and ‘Nightly News.’ Ronan had produced a documentary about the alleged sexual exploits of Harvey Weinstein, a film producer, which NBC did not air.
