Roger Mooking Career
Mooking, who performed under the stage name MC Mystic, was a member of the Edmonton-based hip-hop band The Maximum Definitive in the early 1990s. Their song “Jungle Man” was nominated for a Juno Award in 1993. Mooking went on to join the soul/R&B trio Bass Is Base after the band moved to Toronto to continue their musical careers. However, the band split up before they could record a full album due to creative differences.
Chin Injeti played bass, Ivana Santilli played keyboards, and MC Mystic (Roger Mooking) played percussion for Bass Is Base. Mystic was a rapper, and Injeti and Santilli were the three members who contributed vocals. First Impressions for the Bottom Jigglers, the band’s debut album, was nominated for a 1995 Juno Award in the category of Best R&B/Soul Recording, in addition to the band’s initial single “Funk-mobile,” which helped secure them a deal with A&M Records. The band’s first Top 20 hit, “I Cry,” appeared on the band’s second important album, Memories of the Soul Shack Survivors, a year later. Since then, Mooking has released two albums on his own: Soul Food in 2008 and Feedback in 2013.
