The District was inspired by Jack Maple, the former New York City Deputy Police Commissioner who reformed the NYPD and established the CompStat program. Maple’s experiences were adapted into a book and a television series proposal. He died from colon cancer in 2001. The series was recorded in Los Angeles, with some location shooting in Washington, D.C., and his role in the storyline was restricted after season 1.
