In 1994, Li joined IDD Information Services, a Dow Jones and Company division in New Jersey, where he assisted in the development of a software program for The Wall Street Journal’s online edition. He also worked on improving search engine algorithms. From May 1994 to June 1997, he worked at IDD Information Services. While at IDD in 1996, Li developed the Rankdex site-scoring algorithm for search engine page ranking, which was granted a patent in the United States. It was the first search engine to use hyperlinks to assess the quality of the websites it was indexing, two years before Google filed a patent for a very similar algorithm in 1998. In some of his PageRank patents, Google founder Larry Page cited Li’s work.

Li’s Rankdex technology was later used by the Baidu search engine. He was named one of the “Top Ten Innovative Pioneers in China” in 2001. He was named one of the “IT Ten Famous Persons” in 2002 and 2003. He was named to the second session of “Chinese Software Ten Outstanding Young Persons” in April 2004.
