Kelly found stand-up comedy in 1987 while attending the International Conference of Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous, and he began listening to comedy records after that. In 1991, as part of the sketch comedy troupe Al and the Monkeys, he performed his first stand-up routine on stage at a school talent show. His intention was to enroll at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston to pursue fine arts, but he became interested in comedy and dropped out before completing his associate degree. Dane Cook took over after one of the group members resigned. His first solo performance was at Catch a Rising Star in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his family was also present.
Kelly worked as a waitress, delivered flowers, and dealt with juvenile delinquents before committing to stand-up comedy full-time. Kelly did not do stand-up for two years after his comedy troupe dissolved in the early 1990s. Kelly resided in Los Angeles for a brief time before Patrice O’Neal pushed him to return to the East Coast.
