One month after Robert’s birth, his father carried him in his arm while hand-feeding a chicken carcass to a 3.8-meter (12 ft 6 in) saltwater crocodile. Robert was close to the crocodile, and the incident drew comparisons in the press to Michael Jackson’s dangling of his son, Prince Michael Jackson II, from a hotel window in Germany. Following the incident, the Queensland Government changed its crocodile-handling laws, prohibiting children and untrained adults from entering crocodile enclosures.

Robert Irwin Career

Irwin made a cameo appearance in Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove in 2009. In 2012, Irwin co-starred in the television series Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors with his mother and sister, earning him a Logie Award nomination for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2013. Irwin co-hosted a Discovery Kids Channel television series called Wild But True in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, the show was nominated for an International Emmy Kids Award in the factual category.

In 2013, Irwin published the Dinosaur Hunter series, which he co-wrote with Lachlan Creag and Jack Wells. He appeared as a guest on the British wildlife show Ten Deadliest Snakes in an episode about Australia’s venomous snakes in 2015. He led presenter Nigel Marven through Australia Zoo’s billabong in search of a red-bellied black snake.

Irwin finished second in the junior category of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition in 2016. Irwin also contributes photography to the Australia Zoo Crikey magazine.
