Robbie Timmons is an American television news anchor/reporter who works for WJBK-TV and WXYZ-TV in Detroit. In March 1973, when anchoring the news at WILX-TV in Lansing, Michigan, she became the first female news anchor in American history to anchor the 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm programs.

Timmons accepted a news anchor position with WXYZ-TV, an ABC station in Detroit, in 1982, and went on to win multiple awards, including Emmys and the title of one of Michigan’s most powerful women. Robbie Timmons left the company in October 2010 and now works as an officer for CANTER, a non-profit Thoroughbred retraining organization.

Her love for television journalism and reporting was undeniable. She developed and produced commercials for television. She interviewed for a job as a TV news reporter/anchor at WILX-TV in Lansing in 1972. She went on television as a reporter two weeks later. WILX dispatched Timmons to Washington, D.C. in 1976 to cover President Gerald Ford’s White House address to television news directors. Timmons was used to setting up and operating video cameras, and she planned to gain an interview with the president after videotaping his speech.

As he arrived, she took advantage of a chance to get Ford’s attention by yelling, “Go Blue.” She was aware that President Ford was a proud alumnus of the University of Michigan, having played football there. Timmons was granted an exclusive interview by the president, who grinned. The CBS affiliate in Detroit’s TV news director watched Robbie getting the exclusive interview and was so thrilled that he scheduled an interview with Timmons. Three weeks later, she was anchoring the 11:00 p.m. news for WJBK-TV.

Jim Brandstatter began working in the Sports Department of WDIV-TV in Detroit while Timmons’ career as a news anchor in Detroit took off. In 1980, they tied the knot. Timmons has won six Emmys for reporting and anchoring, as well as two Silver Circle honors, and was inducted into the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2013.

Timmons started volunteering for CANTER in 1998, a non-profit all-volunteer organization that retrains non-competitive thoroughbred racehorses for new livelihoods as trail horses or sport horses. After retiring from television in 2010, she began volunteering full-time as Treasurer and is now Executive Director of CANTER.
