Rob Riggle is an American actor, stand-up comedian, and former US Marine of a multifaceted individual. Riggle’s credits include stints as a cast member on NBC’s sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2004 to 2005, as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show from 2006 to 2008, and as the recurring character Gil Thorpe on the 20th television sitcom Modern Family from 2013 to 2019.

Riggle Family – Education
The son of insurance industry professionals Sandra and Robert Allen Riggle, Riggle was born in Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of two, his family relocated to Overland Park, Kansas. During his time at Shawnee Mission South High School, he participated in the school’s TV and radio stations.
He graduated from high school in 1988, having been selected the most hilarious. Later, he studied theater and film at the University of Kansas, where he became a member of the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta, obtained a pilot’s license, and earned a B.A. in 1992. In 1997, he graduated with a Master of Public Administration from Webster University.

On April 13, 1999, Riggle wed Tiffany. Together, they have two kids. October 2020 marked the filing of their divorce. Riggle made a public allegation in June 2021 that his ex-wife was secretly spying on him and that she had broken into his personal Apple account and taken money from his house.
Later that month, after discovering a hidden camera in his home that was posing as a smoke detector and had over 10,000 videos saved in it, some of which corroborated Riggle’s allegations, he was given a temporary restraining order against his ex-wife. In response to Riggle’s request for a forensic expert to review the video captured by the covert camera, a second hearing was set for July 2021.
Saturday Night Live
Featured in several episodes during the 2004–2005 season, Riggle made his SNL debut on October 2, 2004, during the 30th season opener. In addition to Toby Keith, he has played Mark McGwire, Rick Sanchez, Howard Dean, and Larry the Cable Guy. He had a one-shot role called Leviticus, a rough-and-tumble street preacher who only made an appearance on a Weekend Update segment of the Robert De Niro-hosted Christmas episode (though a different sketch starring Leviticus that was supposed to air on the Hilary Swank-hosted episode was axed after dress rehearsal).
Before joining the cast, Riggle had a non-speaking role in a pre-recorded Fear Factor parody during season 29. He portrayed the father of a child contestant in the “Breakfast in Bed” challenge, where the child has to eat the maggots off a plate of Eggs Benedict with the understanding that if he doesn’t, his parents will get divorced.
Stand-up
Riggle used to perform largely improvisational and sketch-based live comedy, but in 2006 he decided to try something new and started a stand-up performance. He worked on it in a number of New York City comedy clubs before touring colleges and other comedy venues, frequently sharing the stage with Daily Show writers John Oliver and others. He attributes his attempt at stand-up to John Oliver, who he worked with in The Daily Show’s shared office. On December 4, 2009, Riggle hosted a Comedy Central stand-up series Live at Gotham episode. On March 5, 2010, Comedy Central Presents taped a special that Riggle hosted.

Following obtaining pilot’s license in 1990, Riggle enlisted in the Marines with the intention of becoming a naval aviator. However, he dropped out of flight school to focus on his comedic career. Riggle, who served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, frequently discussed his military experiences when appearing on The Daily Show. He even made jokes about being the show’s “military analyst” and claiming he could murder any other cast member. He traveled to Iraq in August 2007 as a USO-sponsored entertainer and reporter for The Daily Show.
Riggle served as a public affairs officer in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Albania, and Liberia for a unit stationed in New York City. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel and was awarded the following medals: the NATO Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon (awarded to him during his tour in Kosovo), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal twice, and the Combat Action Ribbon. After 23 years of service, he retired from the Marine Corps Reserve on January 1, 2013.
The Daily Show
Riggle made his TV debut on September 20, 2006, after joining The Daily Show in September 2006 as Rob Corddry’s replacement.TV Guide referenced Riggle’s “Marines in Berkeley” piece in which he parodied peace protestors at the University of California, Berkeley by dressing in hippie garb and disrupting a nearby Marines recruiting station. Rob Riggle produced the four-part special feature “Rob Riggle: Chasing the Dragon” for The Daily Show by traveling to China during the 2008 Olympics to record skits.
On December 10, 2008, Rob Riggle announced his departure from The Daily Show, saying he was going “to go fight crime.” Nevertheless, in 2009, he made an appearance at Bonnaroo alongside executive producers John Oliver and Rory Albanese, in a program titled An Evening (or Afternoon) with The Daily Show featuring John Oliver, Rob Riggle & Rory Albanese.
During an interview with Will Ferrell on The Daily Show, Riggle made an unexpected appearance on August 3, 2010. Riggle “surprise” everyone by walking onto the set and asking if Ferrell and Stewart were talking about him, as they were talking about his “lack of talent” and other negative things. Ferrell and Stewart seemed genuinely terrified in his menacing presence, extending the ongoing joke that Stewart is afraid of Riggle.
