He worked as a docker in Alaska when he was 18 years old before enrolling in a two-year pre-dentistry program at the University of Washington. He worked as a freelance photographer for extra money while at university until he dropped out of pre-dentistry to go to California and try his luck as a cinematographer. Young obtained work with New World Pictures as a crew member for Roger Corman in the early 1970s; however, the failure of an actor to appear resulted in Young starring in Night Call Nurses. He had opportunities to guest star on prime-time television while acting and joined the Beverly Hills Playhouse theatre group. Young found work in both cinema and television, including a role in Kung Fu alongside William Katt and Gary Busey.
Young, John Chesko, and Brenda Venus filmed American novelist Henry Miller in 1979, culminating in the film Dinner with Henry Miller. Brenda Venus released a thirty-minute version in 1984, but Young owns and is producing almost two hours of footage and has yet to legally release the finished film, one of Miller’s final cinematic performances. Young had established himself as a main performer in both television and film by the mid to late 1980s, appearing in Final Mission (1984). When Young met Steven Spielberg on the set of Amazing Stories while filming “Alamo Jobe,” the idea of Young playing Indiana Jones was planted in Spielberg’s head.
He was cast as ‘Garth’ or ‘Fedora’ in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Despite appearing in prominent roles, he became disillusioned with the profession in 1995 and departed to pursue a career in photography. Young was engaged as a cameraman in a documentary about a young woman who had fled the Bosnian War to start a new life in the United States in the mid-1990s. During filming, the crew discovered that the family had gone missing in Croatia, so Young, the crew, and the young woman traveled to the combat zone in search of the remaining members of her family.
