Richard Land Career
Since July 2013, Land has served as president of Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. He formerly served as president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention in the United States, from 1988 to 2013, when he resigned following his contentious statements concerning the Trayvon Martin case. Russell D. Moore was appointed to replace him after he declared his decision to resign on October 23, 2013. From 2002 until 2012, Land presented the nationally syndicated radio show Richard Land Live! The Christian Post’s executive editor is him.
President George W. Bush appointed Land to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in 2001, a government agency founded by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 to monitor religious freedom around the world. The “Land letter,” an open letter to President George W. Bush from religious right leaders in October 2002, offered a “just war” case in support of the following 2003 invasion of Iraq. Land was the principal author of the “Land letter.” In June 2004, Bush reappointed Land for a second term, and Majority Leader Bill Frist reappointed him in July 2005. After nearly a decade on the commission, Land’s time came to an end in 2011.
Land was named to Bush’s Honorary Delegation to accompany him to Jerusalem in May 2008 for the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. Land has been assigned to the Judge Paul Pressler School of Law in Shreveport, Louisiana, as a member of a Board of Reference. The institution will be linked to Baptist-affiliated Louisiana College in Pineville and will emphasize the Creator God, inalienable rights, and original intent of the United States Constitution. On issues ranging from religious liberty to the economy, Land advocates for a literal interpretation of the Bible. Land was named one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America” in 2005.
