Richard Brooks is an actor, singer, and director from the United States. From 1990 to 1993, he portrayed the eccentric bounty hunter Jubal Early in the space western Firefly and assistant district attorney Paul Robinette in the NBC drama series Law & Order.

Brooks was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Interlochen Academy of Arts in Michigan to study acting, dance, and voice work. He later relocated to New York City and attended the Circle in the Square Professional Theater School.

Brooks gained notoriety for his performance in the Eugene O’Neill Theater Conference production of August Wilson’s Fences while in New York. Following his relocation to Los Angeles, the actor landed television roles in Hill Street Blues and The Russians Are Coming, as well as made-for-TV films such as Badge of the Assassin (1985) and Resting Place (1986). Brooks began his feature film career with Teen Wolf (1985), The Hidden (1987), Off Limits (1988), Shakedown (1988), and Shocker (1989). Brooks starred as OD in Patrick Sheane Duncan’s award-winning film 84C MoPic (1989).Throughout the 1990s, the majority of his fame stemmed from his role as Paul Robinette on Law & Order.
The actor found himself constantly switching between feature films, television, and the stage. After appearing in The Substitute and playing the villain in The Crow: City of Angels (both in 1996), Brooks decided to direct Johnny B Good (1998). It’s about a young black man in the city who makes a positive change after suffering amnesia. Brooks returned to television in 1999 for the brief-lived series G vs E. In 2001, he appeared as a guest on NYPD Blue. Brooks is also well known to some science fiction fans for his role as Jubal Early in the existentialist series finale “Objects in Space” on Joss Whedon’s Firefly.
He also played Hasdrabul Skaras in “Slayer,” the fifth episode of the Brimstone series. He also appeared as Detective Ehrle in the Fox series Drive, alongside Nathan Fillion, with whom he had previously worked on Firefly. Brooks founded his own production company, Flat Top Entertainment LLC, in addition to his film work. Smooth Love, Brooks’ first solo R&B album, was released on Flat Top Records at the turn of the millennium. Brooks played Harmond Wilkes in August Wilson’s Radio Golf at the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York in March 2011.In the 2013 PBS series The Abolitionists, he portrayed Frederick Douglass.
