Career
King began his broadcasting career in 1968, working at WGN, which hired him as a writer and producer the following year. Rich moved to WBBM (AM) radio as a writer and producer in 1970 and became news director and moderator two years later, in 1972. and play-by-play announcer for the Chicago White Sox baseball team during the 1980 and 1981 seasons. In January 1985, he was promoted to sports director at WBBM Radio, a position he held until joining CBS-owned WBBM-TV. and ran a television station. In August 1991, King returned to WGN-TV as a sports reporter and anchor. Following a 1994 reader survey, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that viewers enjoyed the “down-to-earth, understated style” of King and his fellow WGN sportscaster Dan Roan.
King served on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and the American Cancer Society Communications Committee. one King was recognized for his achievements in sports broadcasting. In 1989, he received the highest approval rating (75 percent) among local radio and sports broadcasters in a Chicago Sun-Times reader poll. In 1991, he was named “Sports Broadcaster of the Year” by the Illinois Association of Broadcasters. He also received awards for his sportsmanship from the Illinois division of the Associated Press and the United Press. King won a regional Emmy Award in 1998 for his coverage of the Chicago Bulls basketball team.
