RiceGum Hong Kong
RiceGum posted a video of himself in Hong Kong on his main YouTube channel on June 12, 2018. In the video, he asks strangers and a McDonald’s employee if they have dog on the menu, claiming that “Asians eat cats and dogs in China.” He also jokes about eating dog and cat meat because he is “always open to trying new things.” He makes a remark about Hong Kong street food beef entrails, wondering if it’s dog meat and saying “shit looks disgusting.”
He allegedly recorded comedian M2THAK approaching a man in the Hong Kong International Airport and yelling, “Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?” He allegedly imitated a scene from the Hollywood film Rush Hour starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker to imply that Asian communities do not understand English. M2THAK was also caught on camera repositioning mannequins in a store window into sexually suggestive positions. The video included a scene in which they gave a half-eaten ice cream to a Hong Kong resident.
The video has been compared to Logan Paul’s Japan vlog controversy, with some claiming that he is being disrespectful and culturally insensitive in a foreign country. Jimmy Wong expressed his disappointment in RiceGum’s videos, calling them “disrespectful, ignorant, borderline racist, and shameful to all creators, especially Asians,” and urged him to “please grow up & stop.”
RiceGum released a video two weeks later, on June 26, after the video received widespread criticism in China and other Asian countries, claiming that he was “joking around.” He defended himself, claiming that he was simply using Asian stereotypes to highlight American comedy culture and that people were overreacting. He went on to say that he thought it was acceptable because he is Asian.
He also stated his desire to return to Hong Kong, but he is “kind of scared now because the people may hit and beat me up.” The video, however, was deemed insincere; media site Polygon stated that his apology was delivered “in a somewhat glib manner,” and What’s Trending stated that the “apology” “sounded forced.” His Hong Kong tour video has been removed from YouTube due to a violation of YouTube’s Terms of Service.
