Schell won several beauty pageants, including the Miss Louisiana title at Miss America 1975 and the Miss Louisiana title at Miss World and Miss International. She appeared as a contestant on The Gong Show in 1979. Shear is best known as the host of the USA Network weekend B-movie program USA Up All Night in the 1980s and 1990s. She hosted the studio and live shows, which aired frequently on Friday nights, replacing comedian Caroline Schlitt (the first Friday night show) from 1991 to 1998. In addition to being a guest on the program, she occasionally appears on the show with her Saturday partner Gilbert Gottfried. The way she pronounced the name by raising her voice an octave when saying the word “up” became a household name. Shear also briefly hosted a comedy show called Spotlight Cafe on WWOR-TV in Secaucus, New Jersey, which was previously hosted by singer Judy Tenuta. Schell later appeared nude in Playboy twice: first in a June 1991 “Funny Girls” photo shoot and then in her own photo shoot called “Rhonda Is Up All Night” in October 1993.
Shear also appeared in a variety of comedic situations, from playing the Fonz’s girlfriend on “Happy Days” to the sweet neighbor before she became an audience member on “Man With Child”. Shear later entered the comedy scene, becoming a stand-up comedian in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York, and eventually touring the country with Comedy PJ Parties, more of a sleepover for comedy shows. Shear founded Shear Enterprises with her husband Van Fagan in 2001. In 2003, she began manufacturing out of her home office with a staff of three and launched the Home Shop Network’s Rhonda Shear Intimates line. Her products are popular with retailers worldwide, including The Market (Canada) and World’s Best (UK). Rhonda Shear Intimates continues to grow and is now represented in over 40 countries with over 25 employees in its St. Petersburg, Florida office. In 2010, Shear created the Ahh Bra, which became an overnight success. Ahh bras are the number one bra brand in the world, with over 25 million bras sold worldwide. The company’s 2011 sales were $72 million. By 2013, it had added makeup, swimwear, fragrance, and Boomer Hottie.
In 2014, it was announced that the “lingerie, sportswear, and loungewear” collection, created in collaboration with Hugh Hefner and his wife Crystal Hefner, the 2009 Playboy cover girl, would be available for purchase through Hefner’s website. Shear wrote a book titled “Up All Night: Life Lessons from the Hollywood Bombshell to the Underwear Mogul, Accidental Feminist”, which was published in October 2017.
