Sofer is the daughter of Orthodox rabbi Martin Sofer and psychology professor Susan Sofer (née Franzblau). In 1970, she and her father as well as her brother David relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey. However, they lived in Western Pennsylvania when Sofer was five years old. Her father was the leader of the Beth Samuels Jewish Center in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, where they resided. Later on, she went to the coeducational Modern Orthodox Jewish high school in Paramus, New Jersey, called Frisch School. Sofer was a resident of North Bergen, New Jersey, and her father was the rabbi of Temple Beth El, a synagogue. After completing her studies at North Bergen High School, she enrolled at Montclair State College.

She played Marilyn Bauer, the wife of Graem Bauer and the mother of Josh Bauer during Season 6 of 24. Before Marilyn and Graem were married, they were in a committed relationship with Graem’s brother, Jack. However, Jack was driven away by his father, Phillip, and he ultimately enlisted in the US Army.
