Chakrabarti began working as a reporter for the Breakfast Programme on the newly launched BBC Radio 5 Live in 1994. She later worked as a general news correspondent for both television and radio. She joined the BBC as a Community Affairs correspondent in 1997, covering the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry as well as working on Home Affairs. Chakrabarti joined the BBC as a political correspondent in 1999, where she worked across a variety of television and radio programs, reporting on politics for BBC One, BBC Two, the BBC News Channel, BBC Radio 4, and BBC Radio 5 Live.
