Quvenzhané Wallis Career

Wallis lied about her age when auditioning for Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), which required a minimum tryout age of six. She was chosen from among 4,000 candidates to play Hushpuppy, an irrepressible child genius and survivalist who lives with her dying father in the backwoods bayou squalor of Louisiana. Director Benh Zeitlin told The Daily Beast that when he auditioned Wallis, he knew he had found what he was searching for and modified the Beasts of the Southern Wild script to match her strong-willed nature. Her reading prowess, loud screaming voice, and ability to burp on demand impressed the director and earned her the role. Zeitlin has claimed that “it was just the feeling behind her eyes”.

The film received tremendous reviews when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. In May 2012, Wallis headed to France for the film’s debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Wallis’ performance received considerable praise, and Zeitlin won the Caméra d’Or, the festival’s prize for outstanding debut feature picture. On January 10, 2013, at the age of nine, Wallis was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Wallis, who was six years old when she starred in Beasts of the Southern Wild, is the youngest Best Actress nominee of all time, as well as the third-youngest nominee overall. Wallis is the first African American child actor and the first person born in the twenty-first century to receive an Oscar nomination.

Wallis appeared in the film 12 Years a Slave (2013) and collaborated with the Sundance Film Festival on the short film Boneshaker. In 2014, she became the first African American to play the titular character in the film Annie.
