Qin Yinglin Career

Yinglin graduated from Nanyang Food Company with a degree in animal husbandry in 1989, when he was 24 years old. He met his wife, Qian Ying, who studied veterinary science at Henan University of Animal Husbandry and Economy while working there. After three years at Nanyang Food Company, Qin left his “iron rice bowl” employment in 1992, and he and Qian returned to Qin’s hometown to start a pork business. They only had 22 piglets, to begin with. The business flourished quickly. They had 2,000 pigs in 1994, and 10,000 piglets in 1997. Qin started Muyuan Farming (), which would later become Muyuan Foodstuff, in the year 2000. The company obtained a loan and investment from the International Finance Corporation in 2010.

Muyuan Foodstuff Ltd. had two totally owned subsidiaries and one participating firm by 2013 and was slaughtering over one million pigs per year. Muyuan stock (002714. SZ) began trading on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on January 28, 2014. When pig prices climbed owing to the African swine flu outbreak in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Muyuan’s stock price soared. Muyuan was able to thrive during the swine fever crisis because it owns more of its own facilities than its competitors, allowing it to better manage disease spread.

“The epidemic will force the weaker corporations and farms to entirely withdraw, but it will be an opportunity for profit and development for the stronger organizations,” Qin said, adding that the swine fever outbreak “brings both advantage and pain.” Despite the crisis, Muyuan worked to expand the number of pigs slaughtered and the automation of its pig homes. Muyuan Foodstuff is China’s largest pig producer. The company slaughters five million pigs each year as of 2019. The company’s president and chair is Qin Yinglin.
