Three duPont-Columbia University Awards and three George Foster Peabody Awards, both considered broadcasting’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, have been bestowed upon him for his investigations. Phil was a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service when he started his career as a print reporter. Phil’s articles have revealed government waste and corruption, exposed sex offenders and other convicts teaching children, resulted in people being sentenced to prison, and prompted legislators to pass new legislation.

He’s been named to the Nashville Post’s “In Charge” list of the people shaping Middle Tennessee on several occasions, as well as Business Tennessee’s “Power 100” list. Phil and his colleagues were awarded a Peabody in 2014 for their investigation “Questions of Influence.” Phil’s work, in particular, sparked concerns about Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam’s administration’s awarding of hundreds of millions of dollars in public contracts. Phil received the duPont Award in 2012 for his study of Tennessee drug interdiction agencies’ “Policing for Profit.”

Shumaker. Phil received the coveted IRE Medal in 2001 for his probe of the Metropolitan Police Department. His peers have taken notice of his accomplishments. In 2008, he was chosen to the IRE’s national board of directors by investigative journalists from across the country, a post he maintained for four years. In 2014, he was re-elected.
