Peter Suber is an American philosopher who specializes in the philosophy of law and free access to knowledge. He is a Senior Researcher at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, Director of the Harvard Office for Scholarly Communication, and Director of the Harvard Open Access Project (HOAP).

Previously, Suber was a senior philosophy scholar at Earlham College, director of the Open Access Program on Public Knowledge, and senior fellow of the Scholarly Publishing and Scholarly Resources Alliance (SPARC). He is a board member of the Open Finance Council, the Wikimedia Foundation, the Open Knowledge Foundation , and other organizations dedicated to open access and knowledge sharing. Suber worked as a tracker from 1976 to 1981; in 1976 he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He lectured on philosophy, law, logic, and philosophy. In 1997, he launched Hippias (after Noesis), an Internet search engine for ideas.
Suber participated in the 2001 conference that led to the Budapest Open Access Initiative, the world’s first international open access initiative. He writes Open Access News and the SPARC Open Access Bulletin, which are considered the most authoritative publications and newsletters on open access. He is also the founder of the Open Access Tracking Project and co-founder of the Open Access Index with Robin Peek. In theory, Suber is the author of The Paradox of Self-Remediation, the first full-length textbook on conflict in law, and the first book, The Document of Spelunker: Nine “New Views” – A lengthy “reexamination” of Ron Fuller’s classic non-fiction book. He has also written many articles on personal use, ethics, formal and informal, and the history of law and philosophy.
He has written extensively on open access research and scholarship. His 2012 book Open Access is published by MIT Press and is available under a Creative Commons license. His latest book, Knowledge Without Borders: Selected Essays for Open Access, brings together 44 of the most influential articles on open access from 2002 to 2010 and is also available under a Creative Commons license from MIT Press. Suber has been responsible for the development of TagTeam since its founding in 2011. In 1999, Lingua Franca magazine named Suber one of the 20 most influential teachers in education. In October 2006, Charleston Advisor readers gave him a special Readers’ Choice Award for his “non-library work for our cause.” The American Library Association named him the winner of the 2011 Lyman Ray Patterson Copyright Award. The Choice selected his book for open access as a Best Book of 2013.
