Menzel began working as a professional photographer in 1970 and quickly specialized in high-tech subjects such as virtual reality, DNA fingerprinting, micro-machines, and solar automobiles. He has, however, tackled more typical photojournalistic issues as well. His reporting on the Kuwait oil well fires in 1991 was published as a 26-page cover story in German Geo and earned him a Communication Arts award. His photographs have been shown at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, as well as the United Nations, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the National Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science in Boston, and Visa Pour L’Image, the annual international photojournalism congress in Perpignan, France.
