King began working as a managing editor and correspondent for HBO’s Inside the NFL in 2002. With the return of NFL coverage to NBC for the 2006 season, the network launched a studio show called Football Night in America, which aired between the end of Sunday afternoon games and primetime Sunday Night Football. King joined Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, Sterling Sharpe, and Jerome Bettis as a special “insider” reporter and analyst for the show, focusing on key subjects of the day. From the 2008 offseason to the fall of 2011, King co-hosted The Opening Drive on Sirius NFL Radio alongside Randy Cross and Bob Papa. He has been a regular contributor to Chris Russo’s Sirius XM show Mad Dog Unleashed since 2008.
He appears with the Musers on Dallas’ KTCK-AM/KTCK-FM for a segment. King is also a regular placeholder for key and frequently critical Ticket audio pieces, as indicated by Ticket Host Junior Miller’s frequent cue of “Mark and play for Peter King”. In 2005, New Jersey’s governor assigned King to a fact-finding task team to try to put an end to the usage of steroids and human growth hormones in high school athletics. King has written five books about football: Inside the Helmet (1993), Football: A History of the Professional Game (1993), Football (1997), Greatest Quarterbacks (1999), and Sports Illustrated Monday Morning Quarterback: A fully caffeinated guide to everything you need to know about the NFL (2009).
From 1989 until 2018, he contributed to Sports Illustrated, notably the monthly multi-page essay Monday Morning Quarterback. He’s the author of five books, including Inside the Helmet. He’s been named National Sportswriter of the Year three times. Before joining Sports Illustrated, King wrote for The Cincinnati Enquirer from 1980 to 1985 and Newsday from 1985 to 1989. Since 1992, King has been on the Board of Selectors for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 2006, he began working on Football Night in America, NBC Sports’ Sunday night NFL studio broadcast. In May 2018, King revealed that he will be leaving Sports Illustrated after 29 years to join NBC Sports full-time.
