Hitchener began his career in the media in 1965 at Brisbane radio station 4BH, where he wrote, edited, and presented news bulletins. He is originally from Texas and lives in rural Queensland. Hitchener moved to the Nine Organization following one year at ABC Sydney, introducing Public Nine News first in Sydney and afterward in Melbourne as the co-anchor of Information Center Nine, with Brian Henderson co-mooring in Sydney. Hitchener began hosting the breakfast show on 3AW in 1977, and he eventually moved to 3AK in 1979.
