In 1989, he relocated to Atlanta as the Southern Bureau head, a position he held for five years. Since then, he has covered education and culture, served as Deputy Metropolitan Editor, and for six years published the Our Towns column, which included news, features, tales, and analysis of life in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut suburbs, exurbs, and outlying towns. He has taught journalism classes at Princeton University, Duke University, and Vanderbilt University.
