Szajda played the role of Pawel in the 2003 American romantic comedy-drama Under the Tuscan Sun. After learning of her husband’s infidelity, San Francisco writer Frances Mayes is divorced, which leaves her depressed and unable to write. She finds a Cortona villa for sale when her closest friend Patti convinces her to go on an Italian holiday to Tuscany. In addition to building relationships with her neighbors, the real estate agent who sold her the villa, and Katherine, an eccentric British actress, Frances employs Polish immigrants to refurbish the house.
Frances meets Marcello and they have a brief romantic liaison, but their union is fleeting. Just as she is ready to give up on happiness, Pawel, a Polish laborer, and the neighbor’s daughter approach her for assistance.
