Paul Elia is an Assyrian American comedian and actor from Detroit, Michigan. His first comedy special, Detroit Player, debuted on YouTube in 2024. He is an actor and writer best known for his roles in Paul Elia: Detroit Player (2023), Conan (2010), and Matt Rife: Natural Selection (2023).

Family- Parents
On February 23, 1988, Elia was born in San Diego, California, to parents who were immigrants from Iraq and Assyria. In 1994, his family relocated to Southfield, a suburb of Detroit. His father was a butcher for several grocery chains, and when he was a child, his mother owned a liquor shop and worked as a cashier there. Before opting to pursue a career in comedy, he was only two classes away from receiving his bachelor’s degree in English from Wayne State University and had intended to apply to law school. He has three brothers, who take professions in law, neurosurgery, and mortgage banking.
Career
Before opting to pursue his career as a comedian, he was only two classes away from receiving his bachelor’s degree in English from Wayne State University and had intended to apply to law school. Following his debut on Detroit 1-8-7, he relocated to Los Angeles, California.When Elia moved to Hollywood in 2011, he started working on his own projects right away, using the money he saved from working late shifts at a nightclub. Due to his astute networking abilities, he was able to secure auditions for a number of TV series and movies despite lacking any significant Hollywood representation (Elia claims he auditioned for over 400 projects before booking his first high-paying job: A National ad for Honda).
He immediately started to notice a surge in film and television roles. When The Arab American News questioned Elia about his difficulties, he replied, “You have to take big risks.” Those who take significant chances are the ones who succeed.You will undoubtedly feel afraid, but how you respond to it establishes who you are as a person. Elia has always been outspoken about his Iraqi origins, particularly his Assyrian background, and the problems facing his community in the wake of the bloodshed in the Assyrian territories in Iraq. He has also made a point of voicing the divisions that exist among the Assyrian community, particularly between Chaldeans and Syriacs.
Elia has previously cited his family (specifically his mother) as being one of the greatest influences in his life, due to her experiences in Iraq and her hard-working lifestyle in one of Michigan’s many impoverish neighborhoods. In regard to his comedy, Elia has cited some of his closest partners, Matt Rife and Bassem Youssef, as people who have helped to strengthen his comedy career, including helping him to produce Detroit Player.
