Due to his background in both acting and ice hockey, D’Amato was considered for a part in the 1977 movie Slap Shot, where he finally played the major antagonist. After that, he starred in movies such as Heaven’s Gate (1979), The Deer Hunter (1978), The Deadliest Season (1977 TV movie), and Firepower (1979). Wolverine, the comic book character, was based on his appearance in Slap Shot, which was created by artist John Byrne. In 1980, D’Amato made his stage debut in a production of Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre, held in Vermont.
